Wimbledon 2018: Roger Federer Expects To Return Next Year After Shock Loss In Quarter Final

Roger Federer has insisted that he expects the men's Wimbledon title to be a battle of the big beasts, with the tennis' dominant quartet all coming into the tournament with a chance of winning, according to the Swiss seven-time winner.

Federer still sees the big four of himself, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic as the favourites and likely to extend an extraordinary run at the championships: no-one outside those four names has won the men's singles since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.

With Nadal saying he is in his best shape for Wimbledon since 2011 and coming in as French Open champion, Federer as Australian Open champion, Djokovic returning to form winning Eastbourne on Saturday, only Murray seems below par before the Championships, being knocked out at Queen's and nursing a hip injury.

But Federer insists the reigning champion can play himself back into form in the first week to set up a show down of the world's greats in the latter stages.

Federer said: 'If Andy is anything close to one hundred per cent physically I consider him one of the big favourites to win. It's that simple. It's the same for Novak and the same for Rafa. I think it's very even when we put it all out on the line. Everybody has their own little story right now. For me, everything that happened before at Queen's for Andy doesn't matter so much.

'I feel like Andy's one of the best players in the first week at Wimbledon, so I don't worry too much for him there. He can play himself into shape, hopefully, for week two. Novak is coming back from winning Eastbourne now, Rafa is coming in red hot from the clay. So I see it positive for them rather than negative. I see that they're going to be tough to beat here.'

And Federer insisted that at the age of 35 he was right to skip Paris in order to focus on Wimbledon and the US Open. Having won his first Grand Slam for five years, he insists he has to pick and choose his moments these days.

'That was a decision for not to have compromise, really,' he said. 'To give myself the best chance for grass, so I would never look back and have regrets once I came here. I was ready to play in Paris. I just felt like anything other than winning there feels like I'm not giving myself the best chance for Wimbledon. I'm 35 years old. I've won the French Open once. This is clearly not ideal preparation. I'll be fresh, that's the positive. But the negative is I haven't had matches, whatsoever.

'Within the team, we all felt the same way, that's it better to save myself and give it all I have for the rest of the season. I never regretted it even though it hurt because it was the first time I pulled out of a slam feeling one hundred per cent ready to go.'
