Halloween is one of the best times of the year to indulge in some nightlife, as live music, parties and spooky (or zany) costumes are in abundance. This year, Halloween falls on a Friday, which makes the holiday even better. Take in RISE Haunted House before heading out, or take a stroll during the Columbia Street Block Party in Covington, the last of the fall season.

Here are a few ideas for getting out and about in the bars, restaurants and clubs of the north shore for the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 1:

Making a rare free, all-ages, early-evening appearance on Friday (Oct. 31) at 8 p.m. during Covington's Block Party is popular New Orleans punk-inspired rockabilly outfit, Dash Rip Rock. They'll appear as part of "Oktoberfest" at the Covington Brewhouse, 226 E. Lockwood St., Covington.

The Columbia Street Tap Room's Friday night Block Party entertainers will be Lost in the 60s, starting at 7 p.m., followed by 4 Unplugged at 10 p.m. On Saturday (Nov. 1), the music is by River City Hit Squad, starting at 10 p.m. Find it at 434 N. Columbia St., Covington.

Columbia Street Rock 'n' Blues Café offers up Five Finger Discount on Halloween, starting at 10 p.m. On Saturday, Dubsquad will get the dancing started at 9 p.m. Find the café and club at 407 N. Columbia St., Covington.

At Winos and Tacos, patrons are invited to come for Block Party dressed in their best 1930s flapper or gangster outfits to qualify for giveaways. On Saturday, the restaurant and bar invites patrons to arrive wearing Day of the Dead/Sugar Skull makeup to qualify for giveaways. That night, Pandemonium will perform at 8:30 p.m. and Cuban band OTRA will make music starting at 9:30 p.m. Find it all at 321 N. Columbia St., Covington.

The Green Room will host a Halloween party and street parade during Block Party, starting at 7 p.m. followed by music by DJ Minor at 11 p.m. The Green Room is at 521 E. Boston St., Covington.

Ruby's Roadhouse welcomes Bottoms Up, performing Friday for the roadhouse's Halloween party. There will also be a costume contest, so be sure to wear your best disguise. On Saturday, M.J. and the Redeemers is the featured act. Both shows start at 9:30 p.m. Ruby's is at 840 Lamarque St., Mandeville.

In eastern St. Tammany, O'Aces Lounge will have a Halloween Party on Friday at 10 p.m., with music by Therapy. Find the lounge at 1662 Gause Blvd., Slidell.

Ghouls, goblins and live music-loving nightcrawlers wanting to take a Halloween drive can head out to Birdie's Roadhouse, where on Friday night Autumn Rise-N will perform for their Halloween Party. Put on your best costume and drive on out to 26646 Louisiana 21 North, Varnado.
