I don’t care about the British monarchy. I didn’t watch William and Kate’s wedding, or even Charles and Diana’s. I wasn’t interested in any of Kate’s three births or her stylish photo-ops once the darling little royals were born. I don’t even watch The Crown on Netflix.
But this Saturday is the wedding of Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle. And it is very tempting to tune in, for a couple of reasons: They are apparently breaking all sorts of traditions and there has been all sorts of controversy.
Oh, the controversy. It started immediately when Harry began dating Markle, who has a white father and a black mother — and has been married before. Neither of which is a big deal, but you could almost hear the tsk-tsking from across the pond.
Once the engagment was announced, her half-siblings — with whom Markle apparently has no relationship — were getting their 15 minutes of fame by complaining that they weren’t invited to the wedding. And then this week, her father’s flip-flopping on whether he would attend the wedding (he’s not) grabbed headlines.
