Rosario Dawson Goes From Marvel’s Netflix Series To USA’s Briarpatch Pilot

Rosario Dawson might just have cemented her teased break from

Luke Cage and Netflix’s street-level Marvel shows. That’s because the actress has nabbed the starring role in

Briarpatch , an upcoming USA Network television pilot. Promisingly, the project is being developed by Esmail Corp. and Anonymous Content, the companies of Sam Esmail, the creator of USA’s hit Internet age series, Mr. Robot

.

Briarpatch , which was amongst a slew of new projects that landed on USA’s slate back in April, will see Rosario Dawson star as Allegra “Pick” Dill, a Washington, DC-based investigator who is drawn back to her Texas home town after the car-bomb-caused murder of her decade-younger sister, who was also a homicide detective. Back in the Lone Star State, Allegra will field a perilous investigation that will dig a up a dangerous past that’s close to home in every conceivable way.

Dawson will also serve as an executive producer on

Briarpatch , joined in that capacity by

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail via Esmail Corp. and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton. Additionally, serving as scriptwriter and executive producer is Andy Greenwald, a producer on FX’s

Legion , who also hosts

Mr. Robot aftershow

Hacking Robot . French helmer Yann Demange will direct, known for U.K. television work on

Top Boy ,

Criminal Justice and

Secret Diary of a Call Girl , as well as the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-starring crime movie,

White Boy Rick .

Briarpatch could become a bellwether project for Dawson, who’s banked quite a career, having made her debut in director Larry Clark’s controversial 1995 movie,

Kids , with breakout roles in 2002’s

Men in Black II and 2005’s

Rent , amongst myriad high-profile projects that followed. Indeed, the last three years of Dawson's career have been dominated by the role of embattled nurse Claire Temple on Netflix Marvel shows

Daredevil ,

Jessica Jones ,

Luke Cage ,

Iron Fist and

The Defenders . However, those who caught her run on

Luke Cage Season 2 know that Claire – who’s been Luke’s love interest – had enough of the chaos and finally split, potentially leaving New York (and the Netflix Marvel shows,) permanently... maybe. Consequently, the idea of Dawson landing the starring role in a promising TV project like

Briarpatch is probably not good news for viewers who await Claire’s return.

There’s no word yet on when

Briarpatch goes into production or when to expect its release, but we will keep you updated.
