The directing team are joining with Lucasfilm for an Anthology spinoff based around young Han Solo. It is due to be released on May 25, 2018.
Lord and Miller said today (July 7): "This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us.
"This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you're late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all."
The screenplay from The Empire Strikes Back's Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan will explore the origins of Han Solo.
Han Solo is the space smuggler famously played by Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars trilogy and the upcoming Force Awakens.

Speaking about the spinoff, screenwriters the Kasdans credited the directing duo of Lord and Miller with bringing "a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe".
"They're two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy," the writing team added.
Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul was once linked to playing a young Han Solo in a Star Wars spinoff, but there is no indication that he is involved with Lord and Miller's project.
This will be a homecoming for Christopher Miller, who famously interned at Lucasfilm as a young filmmaker.
Lord and Miller have already turned over directing duties on >The Lego Movie 2 to Rob Schrab, but are expected to remain as producers.
Their Star Wars spinoff is not the project that Fantastic Four filmmaker Josh Trank dropped out of in May. Trank's movie had been expected to explore the origins of the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett.
Also working on an Anthology movie is director Gareth Edwards, whose Rogue One will follow Felicity Jones and a band of raiders trying to steal the Death Star.
