A Wichita mother has been sentenced to nearly three years of probation in connection to the death of her 2-month-old son at a motel, but she remains in jail for now.
Judge John Kisner on Wednesday sentenced 39-year-old Christy Rollings to 34 months of probation with an underlying 34-month prison sentence in the death of Patrick Kempton in August. She was also sentenced to two years in prison on misdemeanor child endangerment convictions.
The DA's office said the judge scheduled a review hearing for January 9 and may give her probation for the misdemeanors. The sentences would run consecutively.
The child's father, 34-year-old Kyle Kempton, is also charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Authorities responded August 30 to the report of a child not breathing at the Scotsman Inn at 5922 West Kellogg. Rollings told investigators she heard Kempton say "I must've rolled over on him." A court document says the two had been drinking heavily for about a week and authorities found empty liquor bottles in the motel room.
The baby's twin was unharmed.
Officers were called to the hotel to check on the children two days prior. Police say the parents were intoxicated at the time and the children were placed with a family member, who returned the children to their parents the next afternoon.
