The Third Annual Shorty Social Good Awards—which highlight the best marketing campaigns in support of causes—were handed out Thursday night at Current in New York.
The event was hosted by Dulcé Sloan, the newest full-time correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.
A new Impact Award debuted this year, and the initial honoree is Jackie Cruz, one of the stars of Netlix’s Orange Is the New Black.
The Shorty Awards cited her work with The Justice League NYC, a subsection of charity The Gathering for Justice, which worked on projects including the Women’s March, the NYPD12, #TakeAKnee and the water crisis in Flint, Mich.
A Shorty Awards spokesperson said, “Jackie’s voice has rapidly grown to become a powerful tool to in her fight to help and empower women, members of the LGBTQ+ community and people of color, addressing issues like immigration reform, payment inequalities, criminal justice reform and diversity in casting, to name a few.”
Gregory Galant, co-founder of the Shorty Awards and CEO of MuckRack, added, “This year, we received a record number of entries from brands, agencies and nonprofits. Brands and organization are taking more stands on big issues than ever before. There was an increase in number of international winning entries this year, with work entered from countries including India, Ireland, Lebanon, Singapore, Canada, Brazil, the U.K. and Denmark.”Gregory GalantShorty Awards
The Shorty Awards provided more details on those international winners:
India: Watconsult had two wins and three honors, and Kaboom, Wash United and White Rivers Media scored one win apiece.
Ireland: Connector had one win.
Lebanon: ABAAD and Leo Burnet Lebanon won Gender Equality for fighting for women’s rights.
Singapore: Our Better World won Youth & Family for spreading awareness about child sexual abuse.
Canada: Zula Alpha Kilo won for a public-service announcement against drunk driving in Canada.
U.K.: Zathu and Girl Effect received a gold honor for gender equality.
Brazil: McCann Brazil and Zombie Studio won gold for a film for childhood cancer.
Denmark: Gorilla Media and the Danish Women’s Society took home two gold honors for #AskFirst.
Other big winners Thursday night included:
- McCann—which dominated last year’s ceremony with Fearless Girl—won five awards for three different entries.
- Group Nine also left with five statues—three for NowThis and two for The Dodo.
- Picture Motion won three Shorty Awards for three different entries.
Guns, gun control and gun awareness were big topics, as @DailyGunDeaths and Price on Our Lives had two wins apiece.
Finally, the Shorty Awards called out a repeat winner: The Pure Imagination Project, a collaboration between MullenLowe and the Alzheimer’s Association, won three awards at the 10th Annual Shorty Awards earlier this year, and Thursday night, it won Best in Public Health and Best NGO (non-governmental organization).
