Longmont Pool and Ice Feasibility Study: tinyurl.com/yagq3bx9
Longmont's City Council on Tuesday night is to discuss whether to direct the city staff to move forward with further research about, and possible design, of a new indoor facility that would house a competitive swimming pool, a separate leisure pool and a National Hockey League-sized single-sheet ice rink.
A consultants' feasibility study completed last September recommended that if Longmont does pursue the possibility of such plans, it should consider building a 91,800 square-foot facility that would include a 50-meter, 10-lane competitive pool, a leisure pool and ice rink.
The consultants — Ballard King and Associates Ltd., and sports architecture firm Sink Combs Dethlefs — estimated a projected $40.6 million design and construction cost.
If the council does want the possibility of a new ice rink and aquatic center studied further, it eventually would have to decide whether to ask Longmont voters' authorization to sell bonds to finance the project — bonds that might be backed by a city sales tax increase that voters would also have to approve.
