The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has moved the Madras High Court demanding a burial spot at Marina beach, alongside other former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, following the death of its party chief and five-time chief minister M Karunanidhi. Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh will hear the petition at 10.30 pm on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan had said Karunanidhi will not be buried by the Anna Memorial on the beach. The state government has allotted a burial site at the Gandhi Mandapam in Guindy instead.
Speaking to the media, a DMK spokesperson said that the party will visit the residence of the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and move the petition on Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the day, senior DMK leader Duraimurugan said outside Kauvery Hospital that a delegation of party leaders met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami on Tuesday and asked for space on Marina beach to bury Karunanidhi. However, Palaniswami did not give them a definite answer. “We had met the chief minister and submitted a request for a Samadhi near the Anna memorial,” Duraimurugan said according to News18. “He had accepted our request then, but has not communicated anything in this regard till now.
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam founder MG Ramachandran, former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and DMK founder C Annadurai have been buried at Marina. Other former chief ministers, who were not in charge of the state when they died, like K Kamaraj and C Rajagopalachari, have their memorials at Gandhi Mandapam in Guindy.
Karunanidhi’s body was taken to his Gopalapuram residence at 8.30 pm. It will then be kept at his CIT Colony residence between 1 am and 3 am, and then at Rajaji Hall from 4 am, DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said.
