James Bond Boss Says \'door Open\' To Black 007 With Idris Elba Hinted As Frontrunner

The Daily Star reports that director Antoine Fuqua revealed the details of a conversation with Broccoli, in which he said "it is time" for a non-white actor to take on the iconic role. 

Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who's certain the progressive move "will happen eventually", with a reported frontrunner for the role.

Indeed, the director seemed to hint that the actor is currently being eyed as a strong candidate, adding: "Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

Danny Boyle will direct the next, Daniel Craig-starring Bond instalment, with work having already begun on the script with Trainspotting scribe John Hodge.

© AP Eon productions heads Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli called the director “exceptionally talented” in a statement, while the head of US distributor MGM said: ”We couldn’t be more thrilled than to bring the next 007 adventure to the big screen, uniting the incomparable Daniel Craig with the extraordinary vision of Danny Boyle.”

The film is scheduled to reach UK cinemas on the 25 October 2019.

His full name is Idrissa Akuna Elba and he was raised in East Ham, London. Elba shortened his name to Idris at school in Canning Town, where he first became involved in acting.

He began his acting career in 1988 with a role in musical theater. With a £1,500 Prince’s Trust grant, he won a place in the National Youth Music Theatre and starred in a production of “Guys and Dolls.”

Before Elba became famous as the hard-hitting detective in the hit series "Luther," his first TV appearances were in real-life murder reconstructions in "Crimewatch."

To support himself between roles in "Crimewatch," Elba worked in a number of jobs, ranging from tire-fitting to cold call advertising. He also worked the night shift in a Ford factory in Dagenham, England.

Elba’s American accent is so impressive that most people don't realize he is English. He developed his accent while working in a Brooklyn barbershop in New York.

While preparing to play Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” he spent a night alone, locked in a prison cell on Robben Island in South Africa. Mandela himself spent time in the same prison for 18 years. Elba's performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.

When Elba is not busy acting, he is moonlighting as DJ Big Driis or Big Driis the Londoner. He has been rocking the decks since the age of 19, when he helped his uncle with a wedding DJ business. Now, he makes club appearances at NBA All Star parties.

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" had a big impact on Elba’s life and music. After wrapping up his shoot for the film, he started working on an album titled “Mi Mandela,” which he released on iTunes on 2014. The album is inspired by his experiences studying to play the part of the South African freedom fighter and statesman.

The actor has also voice-acted in popular video games like "Modern Warfare 3" and for the E3 trailer of "Fifa 15."

Elba admitted that had his acting career not taken off, he would have been a teacher. On "The Oprah Winfrey Show" he said, “I’d be in the teaching profession possibly. My cousin in England is a life coach, and I like what he does, because he gets to help people make better choices.”

A self-proclaimed speed addict, Elba broke the "Flying Mile" land speed record on his Discovery miniseries, "Idris Elba: No Limits.” He blitzed through a measured mile as he drove a Bentley Continental GT Speed, hitting an average speed of 180.361 mph (290 kmph) on Pending Sand Beach in Wales. The previous record was set by Sir Malcolm Campbell at 174.8 mph (281 kmph), in 1927.
