How To Transform A Room TV Style In A Weekend: Melissa Greenough

Imagine if we could just snap our fingers and our home interior was instantly transformed.

It's a bit like that on TV, when a team gets to do over a room in just 48 hours.

But just what can you achieve over a weekend? We asked interior designer Melissa Greenough of Eterno Design, who is on the team in the new series of the renovation show HOMEmade that starts on TVNZ 1 on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

Greenough says it's all about pre-planning. "You need to have a clear plan in your head, and that starts with inspiration, maybe from magazines, Instagram or Pinterest. If you need tradespeople, such as an electrician or plumber, you will need to have these booked as well.

"It's also a really good idea to read up about DIY. Before I started with HOMEmade I thought I was quite good at painting, but I was hopeless.

"And it is important to test colours first before you put any paint on a wall, because the colour can be quite different from a swatch on a card."

Greenough says painting a living room or a bedroom can be like a "breath of fresh air" for the home. "Adding a rug, some cushions, maybe a new pendant light and accessories, such as little side tables and lamps can transform a room quickly. It's amazing what a new coffee table will do. If you have always had a square table, swap it out for a round one.

"Think about art, too. Personal family photos, a black-and-white collage wall, fresh flowers, plants and candles will all help."

The designer says the very first step, however, is have a cull of your belongings.

"I do notice people hold onto stuff for too long. It's a good idea to cull a lot of those things you don't use or need. Less really is more – a space is a lot cleaner and more presentable without loads of clutter. But, having said that, I do like to keep some personal treasures (that are meaningful)."

On the TV show, homeowners move out of the house for 48 hours, while the team comes in to work its magic. Greenough is joined by builder Dion South, landscape designer Dan Mackay from Ministry of Ground and host Goran Paladin.
