Family: Mom Of 4 Tried To Help Homeless Man Accused Of Stabbing Her To Death

A former owner of a Studio City motel who had been convicted of murdering four members of a family operating a rival business and sentenced to death in 2004 died in his cell in San Quentin on Sunday, Nov. 4, in what authorities suspect was a suicide.

Staff found Virendra (Victor) Govin, 51, unresponsive at about 10:15 p.m. while in custody at San Quentin State Prison, according to a news release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It said CPR was administered, but the inmate died several minutes later. He had been housed alone in a single-occupancy cell at the facility’s North Segregation unit, and his death is being investigated as a suicide.

Officials said another death at the prison over the weekend, of serial killer Andrew Urdiales, was also being investigated as a suicide and that there was no indication the deaths were related.

Govin had been on death row since 2005, along with his brother, Pravin Govin, 49, of Cypress.

They, along with Carlos Amador, 42, were found guilty of  strangling then 42-year-old Gita Kumar, her 18-year-old son Paras, her 16-year-old daughter Tulsi, and her 62-year-old mother in law, Sitaben Patel at their house in the Hollywood Hills, then setting the home on fire in May of 2002.

Kumar’s husband, Harish, was not home at the time. He was later heard pleading with 911 operators for help in recordings played during trial.

The Kumar family had owned several businesses, including the Universal City Inn, which was adjacent to the Govin brothers’ Studio Place Inn. The competitors were both trying to build improvements to their properties and had disagreed over the use of a shared alleyway.

Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Jim Tatreau told reporters there had been “a record of this concern and efforts to do something about this piece of property for a long period of time,” following a guilty plea from Amador in 2003. His testimony contributed to Virendra Govin’s conviction in December 2004.  Amador was sentenced to life in prison.

There are currently 740 inmates scheduled for lethal injection in California. Since 1978, 25 have committed suicide, according to the CDCR’s release.
