Welcome to FTW Explains: a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. You may have seen Draymond Green and Tristan Thompson trending on the internet and wondered what was up with that? We’re here to help.
Who are Draymond Green and Tristan Thompson?
Draymond Green is a three-time NBA champion and All-Star basketball player for the Golden State Warriors. Tristan Thompson is a forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who is best known for his relationship with Khloe Kardashian. He’s also Canadian, which is cool.
What started this latest beef?
Green is one of the NBA’s most relentless trash-talkers and has a knack for getting under players’ skins. During Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Thompson was ejected for shoving a basketball into Green’s face.
Green had some choice words about Thompson during the postgame media session as well.
When the Warriors swept the Cavaliers, Green made a point to snub Thompson in the post-series handshake line.
So, Thompson is still mad about that?
It would appear that way. Green piled on Thompson during the Warriors’ parade. Green proclaimed that he refused to shake Thompson’s hand and told the Cavaliers forward, “Tristan, we ain’t cut the same.”
What happened now?
According to multiple reports, an altercation broke out between Green and Thompson at an ESPYS after-party two weeks ago. LeBron hosted the July 18 party at Delilah restaurant in West Hollywood. Phones and cameras were prohibited at the event, according to The Athletic.
The details of what went down between the two players are somewhat inconsistent across these reports. The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre tweeted that Green attempted to apologize. It had been described as a “sucker punch” by a source to The Athletic. The same report had Kevin Durant and LeBron breaking up the scuffle.
Via The Athletic:
“It was a sucker punch,” said one source who attended the party. “But, to be honest, it wasn’t really a punch. It was more like a shove.”
It was a face mush, another source described it. Other reports have described it as a legit punch, maybe even a quick one-two.
Whatever it was, Green was incensed, according to the sources.
Again, the two separated before a full altercation could ensue. Several NBA stars, among them LeBron and Kevin Durant, intervened. They were reminded this wasn’t that type of party.
According to that report, both players remained at the party without incident after that initial altercation.
Others downplayed the whole scene to The Athletic.
“Man, that wasn’t no fight,” one source said. “It was much ado about nothing.”
How are fans reacting to the report?
They’re already coming in strong with the jokes.
The NBA offseason never disappoints.
