County Graduates 10 From Adult Treatment Court

Five years in prison or Adult Treatment Court?

That’s the choice Steven Lang had to make after his third drunk driving conviction following his arrest in Gingellville with a blood alcohol content of .23 percent, nearly three times the legal limit.

“I got off work early and drank too much. Then I got pulled over,” recalled Lang, 45 of Oxford. recalled.

He said it was a no-brainer, opting for the county’s 13-month alternative program to battle, and hopefully overcome, his dependence on alcohol, rather than spend half a decade behind bars.

“It was a pretty easy decision,” he said.

Adult Treatment Court is a sentencing alternative for non-violent felony offenders with serious substance abuse problems, according to the county, helping individuals through counseling, recovery services and intensive court supervision.

On July 11, Lang joined nine others convicted of drug or alcohol-related charges who successfully completed Adult Treatment Court and celebrated graduation at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Auditorium.

“There were a lot of adjustments. But if you are dedicated, it works,” Lang said of the program. Since finding sobriety, he said, he’s also found more self respect as well as respect from family, friends and coworkers.

“And I get more respect as each day goes on,” he said.

Lang noted that the support he received from his family and employer – he works in construction – was particularly helpful as he made his way through the treatment program.

Today, he boasts 17 months of sobriety.

“That’s the longest I’ve gone in 30 years,” he said.

While the nine other grads requested anonymity, here’s some comments they shared when presented certificates of completion:

• “The whole thing is about being honest with yourself.”

• “Alcohol and drugs does turn people bad fast.”

• “I believe God saved my life with this program.’

• “It’s about accountability and tough love.”

• “You just gotta want it. That’s all there is to it.”

The next Oakland County Adult Treatment Court graduation is scheduled for September.
