Mick Schumacher followed in the footsteps of his legendary father Michael Schumacher by winning the European Formula 3 title at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany on Sunday.

The 19-year-old finished second in race two to wrap up the title ahead of Red Bull Racing junior driver Dan Ticktum with a total of 347 points. Schumacher secured eight wins in 12 races, which included five in a row in the second-half of the campaign to win the title.

The European F3 title secures him the super license needed to race in Formula 1 next year, but it looks like he will make the step up to Formula 2 instead which is a natural next step.

"It's a slightly unreal feeling. I'm absolutely delighted," Schumacher said after capturing the title in his home race, as per Sky Sports. "I still can't quite believe it."

Schumacher has gone on to emulate a number of current F1 stars and his seven-time F1 world champion father, who won the European F3 title in 1990 — a year before he made his debut in F1 with the Jordan Racing Team.

Ferrari and Red Bull are said to have shown interest in adding him to their junior programs, but F2 will be the next step in the German’s career. The Italian manufacturer’s team principal Maurizio Arrivabene praised Schumacher recently and made it clear the doors at Maranello will always be open owing to the history Schumacher Sr. has with the team — Michael and Ferrari won five consecutive F1 Drivers’ titles between 2000 and 2004.

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team principal Toto Wolff is the latest to heap praise on the young German. He believes Schumacher has shown he has the potential to follow in his father’s footsteps and become one of the greats of the sport.

Wolff was also delighted the newly crowned F3 champion did in a car — the Prema Racing Team — powered by the reigning F1 champions.

"Attention was focused on the youngster right from the start, and he was under a lot of pressure. It's not easy coping with all that, especially if the season does not get off to the best of starts, as in this case," Wolff said.

"His performance in the second half of the season was therefore all the more impressive. He has shown that he has what it takes and that he can become one of the greats in our sport,” the Mercedes team principal added.

If Schumacher makes it into F1 later in his career, he will add to the 13 father-son combinations that have already made to the top tier of motorsport. He recently revealed winning F1 is his ultimate goal owing to Michael playing such a huge role in his career.

“The goal is to win in F1. My dad had a huge influence on my career. My name opened doors, but you still have to show what you can do. I want to prove that I am a proper racing driver,” Schumacher told BBC.
