By all indications, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost the Kyrie Irving trade. Cleveland is down 0-2 in its series with Boston (and Irving isn’t even playing!). The Cavs gave up their star point guard and got trade package headlined by an unhealthy Isaiah Thomas who never fit in with the Cavaliers.
The chemistry was so bad in Cleveland that a total reset at the trade deadline was needed to salvage the season. At one point, a Cavaliers player was blaming Celtics general manager Danny Ainge for robbing the Cavs.
In an article from The Athletic, Jason Lloyd detailed the frustrated locker room. He wrote:
The toxicity level was so high at one point during this season in Hiroshima that one Cavs player turned and looked at me after one of many particularly ugly winter losses.
“Danny Ainge is a (expletive) thief,” he said. No explanation needed.
And while there wasn’t an indication as to which Cavs player said that, it’s been clear that the Irving trade (and subsequent quick-fix trades) made Cleveland worse off than a year ago.
It was general manager Koby Altman’s first move on the job, and Ainge took advantage.
