2018 Winter Olympics: Shaun White Wins Historic Third Gold Medal, And Redemption

TEAM USA'S CURRENT MEDAL COUNT

Gold: 6

Silver: 4

Bronze: 6

The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea are now well underway, and with the tremendous athleticism on display from the world's finest athletes and the political history being written around the locale, the Olympics are absolutely must-watch TV.

Sibling pair skaters Maia and Alex Shibutani picked up a bronze medal earlier this week in ice dancing, while ski racer Lindsey Vonn took bronze in what will be her final Olympic downhill. At 33, Vonn is the oldest woman to win an Alpine medal at the Winter Games.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM TEAM USA'S OTHER MEDALS

GOLD - After several weather-related delays, 22-year-old decorated skier Mikaela Shiffrin made her PyeongChang debut and took home the gold in the giant slalom after putting down a thrilling second run of 1:09.20, which earned her a combined time of 2:20.02.

GOLD - One day after earning a near perfect score of 98.50 during qualifying, Shaun White came from behind in spectacular, jaw-dropping fashion to take home his third gold medal in the men's halfpipe. In his third and final run, White put down back-to-back 1440s, helping to earn him a whopping 97.75, enough to top Japan's Ayumu Hirano, who took home the silver after a phenomenal second run briefly put him atop the rankings. It was the end of a hard fought road to redemption for White, who failed to medal in Sochi after back-to-back golds in 2006 and 2010. White's win was also historic on two fronts: it marked the United States' 100th gold medal overall at the Winter Games, and it made White the first American man to win three golds in a single event at the Winter Olympics.

GOLD, BRONZE - Chloe Kim, who qualified for Sochi but was too young to compete, absolutely lived up to the hype. She put down an impressive first run in the women's halfpipe to earn a 93.75, enough to secure her the gold medal, but she still did a victory lap anyway. After nailing back-to-back 1080s, Kim received a 98.25. Fellow American Arielle Gold took home the bronze, while five-time Olympian Kelly Clark was just off the podium in fourth.

GOLD - Snowboarder Jamie Anderson fought off harsh winds over the weekend to take home her second gold medal in the women's slopestyle event.

BRONZE - The U.S. figure skating team took home the bronze, thanks in part to a stunning performance by Mirai Nagasu, who became the first American woman — and just third overall — to land a triple axel at the Olympics.

SILVER - Team USA won its first-ever medal in the men's singles luge competition, when Chris Mazdzer took home the silver. Mazdzer had pulled himself up from fourth place after telling fans on Twitter, "I just squeezed through day one of the Olympics and am sitting in 4th place only .001 out of third. Time to rest up and get right back at it tomorrow!!!" Looks like he covered that spread and then some.

GOLD - Snowboarder Red Gerard, the only American qualified to compete in the men's slopesyle, bounced back from a massive ranking deficit after slipping during his second run and completed his third and final run with such precision that it won him the nation's first medal — gold, of course — of 2018.
